Part of the way Roux-en-Y gastric-bypass surgery helps people lose weight is to change the makeup of gut bacteria, according to data from an animal study at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. The study in the journal Science Translational Medicine found that obese mice injected with gut bacteria from other mice that had had bariatric surgery also lost weight and fat, without the surgical intervention.
