IBM and Deutsche Telekom are collaborating on an effort to deliver the cloud-based IBM MobileFirst service to SMBs in Europe. The program is being implemented through Deutsche Telekom's Developer Garden platform via IBM Worklight. "Small to medium-sized businesses will now have access to the IBM MobileFirst enterprise-grade mobile platform to help them lower development costs, introduce mobile apps to the market more quickly and operate them more reliably," says Marie Wieck of IBM Application & Integration Middleware.
Carbonite, a provider of cloud-based backup storage services, will begin offering hosted backup technology through the channel under its BusinessPremier offering for small businesses. The new service features support for database technologies including Oracle's Database, MySQL and Microsoft's SQL Server and will offer 500 GB of storage for a $249 annual fee.
Comcast has created an application store for small businesses to purchase cloud-based products. The Upware store is launching with products for data backup, data security, file sharing and other collaborative products from partners including Carbonite, Symantec/Norton, Microsoft and YouSendIt. Many small and midsize companies rely on outdated solutions for data backup, and that may leave them vulnerable, a study from backup-solutions provider Carbonite says. Half of those surveyed say they use external hard drives, 42% said they rely on USB/flash drives and more than a third said they use DVDs or CDs, the study found. Just 24% of those polled said they had backed up data in the past 24 hours, and the same number hadn't backed up data in a week.
The idea that small and medium-sized businesses are more interested than enterprise users in switching to cloud services is just a myth, says Forrester Research. In fact, according to the firm's recent report, 25% of enterprises are currently using or plan to use virtual servers, compared with 18% of mid-market companies with 100 to 999 employees and 15% of small businesses with up to 99 employees.
