Journalist Ellen Goodman says Americans have been slow to realize the number of people they love who do not have the death they would choose, but change could be coming in the way people think about dying. Goodman started the Conversation Project after being overwhelmed by making end-of-life decisions for her mother. "Should she have another bone marrow biopsy? A spinal tap? Pain treatment? I was blindsided," she recalls. People need to talk with family about their preferences and not wait until a crisis.
