Despite an American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation for exclusive breast-feeding in first six months of life, a CDC survey found that 40% of 1,334 mothers introduced solid food to their babies prior to 4 months. Formula-fed babies were twice as likely to be given solids too soon compared with breast-fed babies. Commonly cited reason included that the infants were old enough and that solids could help promote sleep, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics.
