Researchers should adopt a new approach to studying urban areas, one that moves past surface-level observations to focus on the fundamental forces that shape the development of cities, according to William Solecki, a geographer at Hunter College. "What we need is a comprehensive, integrated, system-level analysis of the city-building process," he says. Solecki and two co-authors laid out their vision for this new approach in a recent issue of Environment magazine.
