The $83.7 million Green Port Gateway Rail Project at the Port of Long Beach in California is expected to produce about $400 million in economic activity, eliminate 2.3 million truck trips per year and generate 340 jobs, officials said. Rail "is an absolutely vital connection" for the port and "these projects will help us maintain our competitive edge as we enter the era of big ships and more cargo," said J. Christopher Lytle, the port's executive director.
