Powered by the rise of Japan's Line and China's WeChat and Sina Weibo, social-networking applications sold in Apple's App Store posted an 87% year-over-year increase in revenue in January, per App Annie. The maturation of the social-network category led by Facebook, Find My Friends and Twitter ranks it third by revenue, just behind games and productivity apps. "Many of these regional services are looking to go truly global in the long term, so we can expect to see a coming showdown between messaging apps as they compete for your time and money," Josh Ong writes.
