The Washington state Department of Transportation's $500 million improvement of the Interstate 5 interchange and state Route 16 in Tacoma is on track. The $184 million first phase completed in June 2011 used 48,000 cubic yards of concrete for the construction of 10 bridges and 77 supporting piers. Crews are 50% finished with the eastbound I-5 improvements and expect work to be completed by mid-2014. The $213 million final phase that will add carpool lanes is scheduled to be built from 2020 to 2022.
