Guida's Dairies is cutting emissions and improving fuel efficiency with the addition of eight wholesale trucks, three tractors and eight trailers with Selective Catalytic Reduction technology. The New England company is also installing logistics software to boost efficiency by monitoring such factors as speed, braking and amount of time spent idling.
A state senator in California is proposing a 1-cent tax on sugary drinks, including soft drinks and sports drinks. Under the legislation, expected to be taken up by the Senate Health Committee on May 1, proceeds -- estimated at $2.7 billion annually -- would be directed to a newly established Children's Health Promotion Fund, aimed at combating childhood obesity. Those who oppose the bill say the tax would target low-income households and could lead to the loss of 18,000 industry jobs.
James Sommerville, co-founder of the Attik agency responsible for Coca-Cola's 2006 redesign, is joining the beverage giant as vice president of global design.

Seattle's Best Coffee has introduced a line of frozen coffee drinks for consumers to blend at home using the milk of their choice. The Starbucks brand teamed with Inventure Foods on the drinks, offered in Coffee Chiller, Creamy Caramel, Very Vanilla, and Mega Mocha varieties.
Christopher J. Reed founded Reed's in 1989, filling bottles of his Original Ginger Brew one at a time and affixing the labels by hand. Now, the company sells drinks, candy and ice cream to about 14,000 retailers nationwide, and last year it saw revenue grow from $25 million to $30 million. Reed's introduced kombucha drinks in 2012, which accounted for 8% of the year's revenue. Reed believes that number will grow to 15% this year.
