A coalition of teachers, parents and others has filed a letter with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, asking that plans for a new school curriculum to be launched in July be scrapped. The plan calls for increasing the number of instructional hours each week from 32 to 38, and eliminating mandatory English, science and social sciences in favor of courses in Bahasa Indonesia, nationalism and religion.
