Netflix's decision to let its licensing deal with Viacom lapse in May isn't necessarily bad news for the parent of Nickelodeon, BET, MTV and other cable networks, Miriam Gottfried writes. Netflix may spend the same amount to license material from Viacom, but do so on a program basis, rather than by channel, Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings said. Meanwhile, Viacom may find other licensing opportunities for the content no longer being shown via Netflix.
