With 2012 revenue of $5.5 billion, Applied Materials overtook ASML Holding to regain its position as the world's top supplier of semiconductor production equipment, measured by sales, according to Gartner. Applied experienced a smaller growth in revenue than many of its industry peers in a year that saw global sales of semiconductor equipment fall 16.1% from 2011 to $37.8 billion, the market research firm estimates.
