Google announced that it will spend at least $600 million to expand its data center in Caldwell County, N.C., and participate in a program that Duke Energy is launching for corporate customers that want to purchase renewable energy without raising costs for other ratepayers. Duke Energy will officially submit the documents proposing the renewable-energy program with North Carolina regulators within 90 days. The program would "give customers like Google the option of offsetting some or all of their energy consumption with new renewable energy generated in this region," said Duke spokesman Jeff Brooks.
