A Green Beret Special Forces master sergeant, 39, was considering amputation of his injured right leg and a medical discharge last year, but the Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis flexible brace has allowed him not only to remain in the Army, but also to return to active duty. Another patient, a 19-year-old soldier, was able to continue his career with the brace, but needs a wheelchair when he is not wearing the IDEO. The brace, which uses the energy generated by walking to propel patients forward while also providing support, is available now only at military medical centers.
