Some parents in Indiana who are opposed to implementation of the Common Core State Standards question whether requiring students to show their work all the time is necessary. The common core requires more conceptual thinking in math, says Doug Clements, a mathematics and early-childhood education researcher at the University of Denver. While showing your work is an important part of the learning process, students who are able to move beyond the use of manipulatives and expanded notation should be allowed to do so without being penalized, he says.
