Given the sorry state of newspapers, it's more important than ever for local broadcasters to ensure government does its job correctly, CBS chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer said at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. "You cannot have a democracy unless people have that independently gathered version of events compared to what government is telling them," said Schieffer, this year's recipient of the NAB Distinguished Service Award. "More and more it's going to be the broadcaster that is depended on for that accurate information."
