Pet insurance companies are seeing an annual 6% to 8% increase in people purchasing coverage, according to Deana Single, director of group accounts for Veterinary Pet Insurance Co., the biggest pet insurance company in the U.S. The growth is partly fueled by companies offering policies as a voluntary employee benefit. Plans vary by company, and while some animals may not incur high veterinary costs, "like insurance for people, if there's a really bad problem, [insurance] can be a tremendous help," said veterinarian Morris Christlieb.
