The HHS Office for Human Research Protections reprimanded a University of Alabama at Birmingham research team for failing to adequately inform parents of risks linked to oxygen treatment, including blindness and death, in a study of 1,316 premature babies. The advocacy group Public Citizen, which released the OHRP letter, asked HHS to review other studies on premature babies and investigate how future oversight mistakes can be avoided. The study was funded by the NIH and involved 23 medical institutions, all of which helped develop and used the consent form.
