Children who were breast-fed for more than a year had a 70% greater risk of being iron deficient than were those who weren't breast-fed past age 1, according to a Canadian study in the journal Pediatrics. While researchers found a 4.8% higher risk of iron deficiency for every extra month of breast-feeding, they failed to find strong evidence linking length of breast-feeding to a higher risk of iron-deficiency-related anemia.
