Eye drops made from heterologous umbilical cord blood may have helped heal diseased corneal epithelium and decreased symptoms in patients with severe dry eye disease, according to a study published in the journal Cornea. The study involved 26 eyes of 13 patients with Sjögren's syndrome and 33 eyes of 17 patients with graft-versus-host disease. Researchers observed a boost in goblet cell counts in 16 patients and reduced corneal epithelial damage in all eyes after treatment.
