Landscapes that require less water are not limited to gravel or cactus, writes Janet Laminack, a horticulture county extension agent with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. A "smartscape" should include one-third landscape, one-third lawn and one-third perennials and shrubs, she writes. Grouping plants according to water needs is a good way to manage thirstier varieties.
