The Roofing Company of Burlington and Johnson & Sons Roofing have merged to create Right Choice Roofing in Racine County, Wis. The new company handles residential, commercial, industrial and institutional roofing.
A Wisconsin high-school student's questions during a field trip to a University of Wisconsin-Madison mechanical engineering lab prompted the professor to offer him a summer internship on the spot. Charles Ricchio II, now 17, continues to study computer science at school and will return to the university lab on winter and summer breaks.
An increasing number of Racine County, Wis., court cases have required the services of skilled interpreters over the last few years. Spanish has been the most common language needed, but the county sought interpreting expertise in 13 other languages during the first half of this year, including Portuguese, Polish and Korean. "There is no question the need for interpreters has increased," Racine County Circuit Court Judge Charles Constantine said.
The Prairie School in Wisconsin was temporarily transformed into a "Window to the World" museum that reflects what the elementary-school students are learning about the world, history and their role and responsibilities in it. The museum was open to fellow students, families and the community to allow students from kindergarten through fourth grade to share what they have learned about topics, including how Native Americans made maple syrup and mined copper.
Racine Unified school district in Wisconsin offers several classes in grades K-5 in which students spend the entire day learning in both Spanish and English. The dual language method allows Spanish speakers to learn in their native tongue while still acquiring English. Some English speaking students get frustrated in the beginning, but most adjust within the first few weeks of the school year. "The goal is bilingual biliteracy, not let's learn English and forget about Spanish," said Patricia Faz, who teaches one of the classes.
