Public comment on West Virginia's Common Core-based standards show a majority support current requirements in math and English, according to the state's education department. The state's board of education is expected to vote next month on possible changes to the standards based on public input.
Facing a large number of school cancellations this year due to severe winter weather and other causes, a school in West Virginia held its first Cyber Day on Monday in which teachers were able to continue instruction online. The online learning initiative was a natural fit for the school, which already operates a one-to-one iPad program and gives students access to digital textbooks.
West Virginia is in the final states of completing a statewide $126.3 million federal stimulus project, but more than $43 million remains unspent, according to a report from state officials, who note that Frontier Communications has built 583 miles of fiber-optic cable. The telecom provider has linked schools, libraries and other institutions, with seven miles remaining. Frontier has also completed most of an 85-mile link between West Virginia University and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Pocahontas County.
A team of students from John Adams Middle School in Kanawha County, W.Va., is working to build a rocket that can compete in the Team America Rocketry Challenge next month. The team is among the 100 that qualified for the national level of competition, a program aimed at inspiring students in science, technology, engineering and math. "Qualifying within the top 100 is an incredibly challenging and exciting achievement," said Marion Blakey, president and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association, among the competition's sponsors.
As lawmakers in West Virginia consider legislation that would provide all students with free breakfasts and lunches at school, some educators and parents say they back the measure. Supporters say the bill -- which also calls for a private-public partnership to fund the meals -- would help students learn and also bring relief to families who may struggle to provide enough food for their children.
