When it's time to pick a lunch venue, Jon Bell likes to jump in and suggest McDonald's; everyone always hates the idea, which breaks the ice and leads them to produce more creative suggestions. Similar strategies can be used to guide ideation in other areas, Bell argues. "I call it the McDonald's Theory: people are inspired to come up with good ideas to ward off bad ones," he writes.
