Bankruptcy is more likely among people diagnosed with cancer, including colorectal cancer, according to research from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Cancer patients are 2.65 times more likely to declare bankruptcy than adults without cancer, and younger patients are more likely than older patients to declare bankruptcy, the study in Health Affairs found. Among the financial stresses that raise the risk are the cost of care, job loss due to illness, travel expenses to treatment facilities and loss of insurance.
