Carload volume on U.S. railroads rose 1.9% in the week ending May 18 from the year-ago level, and intermodal activity climbed 3.5%, according to the Association of American Railroads. Shipments of petroleum and petroleum commodities increased 38%, and half of the 10 carload categories posted gains. Overall U.S. traffic increased 2.6% in the latest week versus year-ago levels, AAR said.
