It doesn't seem likely that U.S. carriers will let fliers use their phones during takeoff or landing anytime soon. Christopher Null writes that business fliers should be able to use their phones in airplane mode to avoid about an hour of downtime. "If you think about it, all the time wasted while gadget use is disallowed results in up to an hour of downtime on each flight, and no one has shown any issue with devices in airplane mode impacting cockpit instrumentation," he writes.
