Physician Jan Brunstrom-Hernandez, who has cerebral palsy, opened a clinic in St. Louis 15 years ago to treat children with the disorder after finding that treatment options had not changed much since her childhood in the 1960s. Brunstrom-Hernandez, whose treatment emphasizes exercise and independence, said she did not become comfortable with herself until she began treating others with cerebral palsy. "I have gotten as much or more out of taking care of these patients as they have ever gotten from me," she said.
