Clinicians dealing with trauma- or surgery-related bleeding should be aware of the advantages and disadvantages with every potential treatment, according to a presentation at a pharmacists' meeting. Rob MacLaren of the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy spoke about the need to minimize the risk for the "lethal triad" of hypothermia, acidosis and dilution, which he said are linked with a 95% risk of death. Decisions to transfuse are not made lightly because blood products carry risks just as other treatments do, MacLaren said.
