Federal officials have done little to identify or prevent some doctors and other health professionals from prescribing huge quantities of potentially harmful, addictive or disorienting treatments under the Medicare Part D benefit, according to an analysis of Medicare prescription records by ProPublica. This series cites examples of providers prescribing drugs despite warnings and other indications that they may not be safe; says the Prescriber Checkup tool can be used to check the safety of medications and the prescribing trends of providers; and proposes ways to increase the oversight of prescribing trends under Part D.
