Caltrans has unveiled its repair plan for the broken threaded rods, or bolts, on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. It has decided to spend up to $10 million to fabricate a steel saddle that will be fastened to shear key plates with tensioned cables, serving as a substitute for the 96 faulty bolts -- 32 of which broke when tightened. However, it's still unclear whether the 2,000 other bolts used should be repaired or just monitored, and that has delayed the decision of whether the bridge can open on schedule.
