One school in Washington, D.C., uses the days after standardized testing for a four-day intercession where for two hours a day students participate in enrichment lessons -- from zoology to running -- that fall outside of common-core requirements. For instance, fourth-grade teacher Rebecca Schmidt had students brainstorm about safety and what they'd like to learn and then took them outside to run on an urban track she laid out.
