U.S. researchers looked at data from the National Hospital Ambulatory Care Survey and found that intensive care admissions from the emergency department rose by nearly 50%, from 2.79 million in 2002-2003 to 4.14 million in 2008-2009. Of all the ED patients, those aged 85 and older had the highest increase in the rate of ICU admissions. The findings appear in the journal Academic Emergency Medicine.
