A long-planned but unpopular merger of two New Orleans high schools might be delayed or stopped under a vote by a committee of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Among other concerns, opponents say merging L.B. Landry and O. Perry Walker high schools could create dangerous rivalries and dishonor the memory of pioneering black physician Lord Beaconsfield Landry. The full board is expected to consider options regarding the planned merger at its meeting in June.
