More surgical specialists and subspecialists were paid for on-call emergency department duty in 2012, but the pay rate for subspecialists declined, according to a Medical Group Management Association survey. About 81% of surgical specialists and 87.6% of subspecialists were paid for call coverage, the survey found. The average rate paid to subspecialists decreased by 10%, though it remained far higher than the rate paid to primary care physicians.
