High schools that focus on science, technology, engineering and math are creating more opportunities for their students through partnerships with universities and businesses. For example, the University of Washington and the STEM High School in the Lake Washington School District are working together to provide internships and college-level coursework to students. "No longer are we just doing lab work for the sake of doing lab work," said Cindy Duenas, the school's principal. "[Our students] see that they're working on a real issue that could have a positive impact."
