Iowa dentists are not bound to charge rates set by an insurer for services that the insurer will not reimburse, the state Supreme Court said in a unanimous ruling. Dentists may set their own rates for services that the insurer covers but will not reimburse due to plan deductibles, waiting periods or other factors. Opponents said the ruling means higher costs for consumers, but supporters said it will help dentists remain competitive.
