Although slug bait containing iron phosphate is not considered as toxic for dogs as bait that contains metaldehyde, it is of increasing concern, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Calls to the National Pesticide Information Center's hotline regarding metaldehyde bait decreased from 2005 to 2011, while calls about the newer bait increased over the same period. Iron phosphate exposure hasn't been connected to any dog deaths, but it has been linked to lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea in 56 cases called into the hotline.
