A daily supplement of 1,600 international units of vitamin D increased plasma levels among healthy, term, breast-fed babies after three months, reaching the higher level recommended by some pediatric societies, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers found that reduced doses of the supplements elevated plasma concentrations to the Institute of Medicine's lower target levels.
