Downloading and in-game purchases should push U.S. mobile gaming revenue to $1.76 billion this year and well past the $3 billion mark by 2016, according to eMarketer. Ad revenue is predicted to grow the fastest by percentage, but in-game purchasing is expected to surpass downloading as the primary revenue source by next year and maintain its lead at least through 2017. The mobile phone game market should continue to add players at a double-digit compound annual growth rate until 2015, when it will have captured more than half the entire U.S. population, eMarketer says.
