Palms provide a tropical flare to the landscape, but they differ from other trees in terms of requirements and growth patterns, writes Joe White, a retired Extension horticulturist at the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. Unlike other trees, palms cannot heal their wounds, and only have a single growing point on top that should not be damaged during landscape maintenance. They thrive when planted during the summer, when the soil is warm, White notes.
