Monsanto's patents for its Roundup-resistant soybeans were violated by an Indiana farmer who grew the beans rather than purchasing new seeds, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in a unanimous ruling. The court rejected farmer Vernon Hugh Bowman's claims that Monsanto's patent extended only to the sale of the first crop of genetically modified beans planted. The court declined to extend the ruling to other nanotechnologies and self-replicating technologies.
