Illinois has been added to the list of states that have porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, a disease that causes mortality of 50% to 80% in piglets but wasn't known to be present in the U.S. prior to last week. However, USDA chief veterinary officer John Clifford warns against overreacting. "We don't think that this should be a disease that's quarantined -- and we don't think that states should take action against this," Dr. Clifford said. "And we certainly hope it doesn't impact our trade."
