After two dogs were diagnosed with the plague in New Mexico, public health officials there are warning residents about the risk of contracting the disease, a potentially deadly zoonotic infection caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis. Fleas can transmit the bacteria via bites, but people can also be exposed to the infection through contact with bodily fluids or tissues from infected animals.
