New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and 17 other U.S. mayors sent a letter to Congressional leaders Tuesday, urging them to limit the ability of food stamp recipients to use the subsidy to buy soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages. The beverage industry objects to anti-obesity efforts that target soda, saying the problem is much more complex. "Targeting struggling families who rely on (food stamps') vital safety net will not make America healthier or reduce government spending," the ABA said in a statement.
