Archaeologists may have discovered the 1,200-year-old lost city of Mahendraparvata near Angkor in modern-day Cambodia using airborne laser scanning called LiDAR. The medieval city is hidden under the dense forest near the holy temples of Angkor Wat and was a large, low-density urban area with sprawl and a concentrated population in the city center. The LiDAR scanning also revealed unique architectural details that do not exist anywhere else in the region.
