The American Medical Association voted to urge the FDA to change its lifetime deferral policy for blood donations by men who have sex with men in favor of a policy that would assess donors on an individual basis. "This new policy urges a federal policy change to ensure blood donation bans or deferrals are applied to donors according to their individual level of risk and are not based on sexual orientation alone," said Dr. William Kobler of the AMA's board.
