The Xperia Z smartphone from Sony has enjoyed sales of almost 1 million units since its February debut, but it's already considered old hat by some Japanese consumers, Hiroko Tabuchi writes. NTT DoCoMo is now shifting its marketing focus to the newer Xperia A handset, before the Xperia Z gets its U.S. debut with T-Mobile USA. While new products seem to fascinate the Japanese phone-buying public, the iPhone -- of which there is a new model only once a year -- remains Japan's most popular smartphone, Tabuchi notes.
