For schools built in the 1970s, the open design -- featuring few interior walls -- was later found by some to be distracting and noisy. One Indiana district, among others, has attempted to close off its open schools with curtains and dividers. This summer, however, the district is installing interior doors in its nine elementary schools -- in part, because of safety concerns that arose after the tragic shootings last December at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
