Superintendent of Philadelphia's public schools, William R. Hite Jr., has delivered 3,783 layoff notices to teachers, counselors, assistant principals and other staff. He said the cuts are part of a "harsh reality" of a district with a $304 million shortfall. The district's layoffs "are nothing less than catastrophic for our schools and students," said Hite, who is expected to announce more layoffs to administrative staff.
